The Damen Marine NOx Reduction System is an advanced active emissions control system using selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology suited for diesel marine engines. We have designed the system to operate on both high and low loads in ambient conditions from -30 degrees C up to 45 degrees C.

Proven innovation

All of our Next Generation Tugs are designed to be compatible with the Damen Marine NOx Reduction System, which can be fitted – or retrofitted – at any time. Damen’s well-known standardisation strategy gives our clients fast access to a proven, modular system.


Over 100 years of experience

In order to be ready for the new rules, Damen began the development of an emissions reduction system for its tugs some years ago. Teaming up with emissions control specialists Emigreen, we combined our 90 years of shipbuilding experience with their 20 years of R&D.


In-house solution

The result was the in-house designed and development of a class-approved solution - the Damen Marine NOx Reduction System. This innovative system reduces the NOx emissions of a tug by some 80% compared with the IMO Tier II requirements.


NOx and noise reduction

It wasn’t without its challenges, technical ones for sure, but also the relative lack of space in a compact vessel such as a tug. We got around that by combining the system with the tug’s silencers – reducing not only NOx emissions, but noise levels at the same time.


Strong as steel

The Damen Marine NOx Reduction System uses a catalyst to react with urea to chemically reduce NOx emissions. To ensure its suitability for urea, the system uses stainless steel for its tanks, transfer pump and piping.


Connecting to the cloud

The SCR system can be integrated with the remote monitoring IoT platform Damen Triton. Connected in this way, the operator can continuously monitor the system to control and optimise cleaning efficiency and to control ammonia slip.


Easily fitted & retrofitted

The modular and compact standardised system can be fitted – or retrofitted – to Damen vessels old and new. In fact, the modularity of the system, combined with the design’s certification for use with multiple types of engine, means it can often be installed to non-Damen vessels too.
