A HISTORY OF DAMEX SHIPBUILDING & ENGINEERING
Established in January 1995, Damex Shipbuilding & Engineering is a self-sustaining organisation where all the necessary shipbuilding skills are readily available. We act as a license holder and an after-sales service location for Damen Shipyards Holland. Certificates from classification societies such as Lloyds Register of Shipping and Bureau Veritas are available. Apart from a wide range of Damen Shipyards’ designs, all kinds of special crafts in steel or aluminium can be built, according to our customers’ design.
A History of Damex Shipbuilding & Engineering
The history of Damex Shipbuilding & Engineering begins in 1980 with the building of a series of Stan Tugs to Cuban operator Navegación Caribe. After that several other ships where to follow. After the joint venture with Damen Shipyards Group some of the ordered vessels were constructed in The Netherlands. Others were built at the El Nispero yard under supervision of the Damen Technical Cooperation.
Joint venture and Helms-Burton Act
In 1995 we asked the Damen Shipyards Group to participate in a 50-50 cooperation and in the same year the joint venture Damex Shipbuilding & Engineering was established. A year later the American embargo against Cuba was strengthened with the Helms-Burton Act. This act extended the territorial application of the initial embargo to apply to foreign companies trading with Cuba. Damex however is not located on confiscated property nor is Damex using other confiscated property.
After the joint venture was formed with the Damen Shipyards Group our yard got stronger and stronger. With the extended level of knowledge and experience within the group, we were able to improve our work and project structures. In 1997 Damex was awarded with the Quality Assurance Certificate I. S. O. and in 2001 we were issued by Lloyd’s Register.
Increasing capacity and complexity
During the past two decades Damex has added a shed, a slipway and an array of equipment. With the increased capacity the yard has taken on ever more challenging projects. After 2010 we have delivered two Damen Stan Patrol 4207, four Stan Lander 5612 and a Stan Tanker 5412. Furthermore the first ever Caribbean built ASD 2810 is scheduled for late 2017. While taking on these challenges, we keep expanding our repair activities and trying to help as many clients as possible. Our goal is to be the most efficient and best quality yard in the Northern Caribbean!
