Two-day event aims to innovate smarter seagoing vessels
Damen, along with other the Netherlands-based maritime companies, has sponsored the Shipathon event taking place on 9th and 10th, November.
Shipathon is the only hackathon for game changers within the maritime industry and aims at innovate solutions to make seagoing vessels smarter. To those ends, students and young professionals (18-35) in multi-disciplinary teams of five will design and conceptualise new solutions and applications.
Shipathon will take place at Undercurrent on the waterfront in Amsterdam. Here, the teams will be given one nautical mile of time – eighteen hours and 52 minutes – to work on one of three set challenges. The teams will be assisted by a personal mentor, a maritime professional from a renowned company in the industry. For this role, Damen’s Remco van Dam, Junior Project Manager will be attending Shipathon. On the 10th November, the teams will pitch their solutions to a maritime jury. Following the event, an impressionof Shipathon will be shown at the Maritime Awards Gala on the 12th November, in Zaandam.
The Shipathon is initiated by Netherlands Maritime Technology with the Royal Association of Netherlands Shipownerss with the support of the HackathonFactory. Damen’s silver sponsorship of the event involves providing a mentor from within the organization who will guide multiple teams during the hackathon. The sponsorship guarantees several place for Damen employees to attend the show, to further develop networking opportunities that will encourage innovative thinking across the industry. In addition to providing sponsorship for the event, Damen is also providing its local yard, Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam, as the location for mentors’ innovation bootcamp.
