In July 2020, the sail-training clipper Stad Amsterdam completed a mid-life refit at Damen Shipyards Den Helder, twenty years after she finished being built by Damen.

The project has been undertaken with the objective of increasing her efficiency and sustainability. Its main features have been the replacement of her main engines and diesel generators with a peak shaving battery and a new shore power system. A new sewage system has also been installed that extracts the residue while purifying the water for clean, safe disposal, along with a chilled water system. Almost all the piping in the engine room has also been renewed.

Elsewhere, the galley has been taken out and has been partly replaced along with several new pieces of energy-efficient, low emissions equipment.

Stad Amsterdam is a modern classic built by Damen in 2000 using a combination of the best shipbuilding methods of the past and those of today. She is 76 metres long and can set 31 sails with a total area of 2,200m2.

The works took place at Damen Shipyards Den Helder’s Willemsoord facility. Its dry dock at the Oude Rijkswerf was ideal for the project and the yard is experienced in these kinds of works. It also has good facilities for deck and rigging work, some of which was carried out by the ship’s crew.

Damen Shipyards Den Helder

Damen Shipyards Den Helder started out as a small ship repair business in 1923 and seventy years later joined the Damen Shipyards Group. Now it is focused on repair and maintenance for the offshore, dredging, fishing and towage markets. It also undertakes the occasional new build project.
