Icebreaker, research vessel and supply vessel in one
Transforming today’s curiosity into tomorrow’s knowledge
The ASRV Nuyina has been designed so that it can support scientific research that answers the critical questions of today, but it must also cope with future research demands over its 30 year lifespan, some of which are currently unknown.
Large icebreaking and cargo capacity
The icebreaker is able to travel at an efficient cruising speed of 12 knots, with a maximum sustained speed of 16 knots in open water, and break ice at a continuous 3 knots in ice of 1.65 metre thickness. The ship supports voyages for up to 90 days, which includes the ability to remain within the Antarctic area for up to 80 days. Its cargo capacity includes a whopping 1200 tonnes below decks, in up to 96 20-foot shipping containers, and 1.9 M litres fuel.
Increased endurance and operational flexibility
The ship enables its crew and scientists to cross thousands of kilometres of the world’s stormiest seas, navigate through Antarctica’s formidable sea ice barrier, and live and work for extended periods on the coldest, driest and windiest continent on earth – some of the harshest conditions in the world. The ASRV is able to travel 9000 nautical miles and supply two stations in one roundtrip. In addition, a series of smaller support craft — a science tender, two personnel transfer tenders, a stern tender and two barges — forms part of the ‘ship system’.
A high standard of environmental performance
It’s not easy being green but the Nuyina’s environmental impact is as close to zero as is currently possible. The ship complies with mandatory strict Antarctic environmental regulations, as well as at least 12 voluntary ones including additional requirements for dealing with ballast water, grey water, refrigeration systems, exhaust emissions, and the ship’s energy efficiency management.
State-of-the-art research, rescue and resupply capabilities
Scientific equipment includes a moon pool, drop-keel, multi-beam bathymetric and scientific echo sounders, fisheries sonar systems, hydrophones and underwater cameras to support a wide range of scientific research, and offers scientists unprecedented and extended access to the Southern Ocean and Antarctica. The ship can accommodate 117 personnel with modern services including a specialised medical facility and is able to transfer personnel and cargo using a range of means over water, over ice and by air, including four light helicopters or two medium helicopters.
