Proactive maintenance helps maximise vessel availability
Maintaining dependable vessel performance requires more than carrying out scheduled maintenance. It also means identifying opportunities to address potential issues before they develop into operational disruptions.
During a recent technical assessment and maintenance (TAM) on the 3512C main engines of the tug VB Bentayga, several additional recommendations were identified that could be incorporated into the vessel’s upcoming top-end maintenance programme.
By integrating these activities into an already planned maintenance window, the vessel owner was able to address multiple requirements during a single intervention. This approach helped minimise operational disruption, reduced the risk of unexpected equipment failures, and supported the long-term reliability of the propulsion system.
Combining corrective actions with scheduled maintenance also created efficiencies in the use of specialist resources, tooling and engineering support. Carrying out all required work during one planned stop avoided the need for additional maintenance visits, helping to optimise maintenance expenditure over the vessel’s lifecycle.
This project demonstrated the value of proactive maintenance planning. By identifying and addressing potential issues at the right moment, vessel operators can improve reliability, maintain operational readiness and make the most of every maintenance opportunity.
