Aftertreatment solutions
Future-proofing for your fleet
When new emission regulations came into force, Damen began preparing its vessels. The Damen NOx Reduction System was born. This compact, solution combines sound and emissions reduction in a single unit. It enables the rapid upgrade of a vessel, reducing emissions for IMO Tier III, Euro Stage V and Ultra-Low Emission Vessel (ULEV) compliance, while increasing vessel value and charter rates.
Damen Sustainable Solutions has installed over 400 class-certified aftertreatment systems for a wide range of vessel types.

Prepared aftertreatment solutions
We prepare newbuilds for operation in NOx emission control areas (NECAs) with a prepared silencer. This reduces noise to 45 dB (A) and provides the possibility to upgrade to a certified IMO Tier III, BV ULEV notation, or EU Stage V compliant system.
IMO Tier III certified system
The compact Damen NOx Reduction System offers minimal engineering and outfitting costs and reduces NOx emissions by 80%. It is available in a number of versions to meet a wide range of operational requirements.
EU Stage V certified system
For our EU Stage V certified system we have incorporated a diesel particulate filter into the system. Primarily aimed at the inland shipping sector, the system reduces particulate matter alongside NOx. The system also features a spark arrestor.
ULEV System
The incorporation of a diesel particulate filter also enables compliance with BV’s ULEV notation. This is an ideal solution for seagoing vessels operating in low emissions areas, or close to populated areas, or if personnel are working on deck.
Aftertreatment refits
Increased demand for sustainable performance often leads to higher day rates for efficient vessels. This makes an aftertreatment system beneficial for existing vessels. We have extensive experience in aftertreatment refits.
Proof of concept
Damen installs NOx Reduction Systems to Van Oord’s Nexus
Damen installed five NOx Reduction Systems to Van Oord’s cable-laying vessel, Nexus. The company was looking to reduce its emissions as it worked towards its ambitious safety goals. Van Oord selected the Damen system for its compact nature and in-house installation capabilities.
Port Marlborough New Zealand goes beyond requirements
Damen delivered an ASD Tug 2312 to Port Marlborough New Zealand (PMNZ) with a NOx Reduction system installed. While there is currently no regulatory requirement in New Zealand, PMNZ is focused on increasing the sustainability of its operations.
Dredging contractor gets a sustainability boost
When Damen delivered a Booster Station (BS) 500 to Hegemann, it was requested to install an EU Stage V system. This enables the German contractor to comply with EU Stage V requirements during its dredging operations.
