In October 2021, Damen Shiprepair Harbour & Voyage (DSHV) delivered a comprehensive midlife refit for the Kenyan Navy vessel KNS Shupavu. The project was a significant one, both for its extensive scope, and as the first major refit undertaken at Damen’s facilities in Mombasa. Because of this, it provided a valuable opportunity for on-the-job learning and capability building.

Extensive project scope

With the exception of the propulsion shafting and propellers, DSHV undertook the renewal of virtually the entire vessel. This included the complete renovation of all accommodation areas and installation of new main engines and gearboxes.

Additionally, DSHV oversaw extensive steel repairs and structural upgrades, as well as the replacement of onboard infrastructure and electrical systems. Approximately 20 containers of materials and equipment were mobilised to Mombasa, demonstrating the scale and complexity of the project.

Global execution, local delivery

To execute the work, DSHV assembled an international team of specialists on-site, supported by local resources and subcontractors. During the project, DSHV collaborated closely with the Kenyan Navy, yard operator Kenya Shipyards Limited and the local teams, sharing expertise and practical knowledge.

Collaboration and knowledge transfer

This cooperative approach ensured not only the successful delivery of the project, but also led to the strengthening of local skills and operational experience.

Furthermore, combining global expertise with local execution ensured project continuity despite significant challenges.

Flexible problem-solving

The work took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in considerable logistical constraints, including delays in material deliveries. DSHV responded to this with flexibility, applying continual re-planning and creative problem-solving throughout.

The project took place over a period of approximately eighteen months, after which the vessel was fully refurbished and ready for re-entry into service. Following relaunch, DSHV undertook final commissioning to make sure that all systems were performing as required.
