Damen Shiprepair Brest has recently celebrated the completion of its 50th cruise ship project since joining the Damen Shipyards Group in 2012, underscoring its commitment to advancing efficiency and sustainability within the maritime industry.

Leading the way in sustainable maritime solutions

As part of Damen Shipyards’ ambition to become the world’s most sustainable and connected maritime solutions provider, Damen Shiprepair Brest is at the forefront of green transformation. The yard’s strategic location near the English Channel, coupled with one of Europe’s largest docks, enables it to deliver environmentally responsible ship repairs and refits. These services help clients reduce emissions, boost operational efficiency, and extend the lifespan of their vessels.

Bulbous bow replacement: enhancing efficiency and reducing emissions

A key area of expertise at Damen Shiprepair Brest is the in-house fabrication and replacement of bulbous bows large structures weighing up to 160 tonnes. By installing new, hydrodynamically optimised bulbous bows, the yard enables cruise ships to reduce water resistance, resulting in lower fuel consumption and emissions. This advanced engineering not only supports sustainability objectives but also delivers tangible operational savings for ship owners.

Recent projects, such as the refit of the 340-metre Disney Fantasy and its sister ship Disney Dream, demonstrate the yard’s capability to execute complex upgrades that prepare cruise vessels for greener operations. In addition to bulbous bow replacements, Damen Shiprepair Brest installs efficient propulsion and manoeuvring systems and applies biocide-free silicon paint systems, further enhancing vessel performance.

World-class facilities and skilled workforce

With drydock number 3 measuring 420 x 80 metres and a team of over 180 skilled professionals, Damen Shiprepair Brest is well-equipped to handle large-scale, logistically challenging projects. The yard’s long-standing relationships with suppliers and partners, including Meyer RE of the MEYER Group, reinforce its reputation for reliability and innovation in cruise ship efficiency.

Collaboration at the core of success

“Our ability to deliver these ambitious vessel transformations comes from the skill of our personnel, our on-site facilities, and the strength of our collaborations,” says Commercial Director Ronan Scolan. “Loyal customers such as Disney Cruise Line and many others have trusted us with 50 cruise vessel projects over the past decade. Our collective expertise enables us to support the maritime industry’s transition towards greater sustainability.”
