What happens behind the gates of one of the Netherlands' largest ship repair yards? During Havenweek Amsterdam, Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam will open its doors to the public on 19, 20 and 21 June. Visitors will gain a unique behind-the-scenes insight into a sector that is essential to the Dutch economy, the energy transition and maritime security. They will also have the opportunity to step aboard Zr. Ms. Rotterdam, one of the largest vessels in the Royal Netherlands Navy.

The Port of Amsterdam plays a vital role in supplying the Netherlands, supporting the energy transition and facilitating international trade. Yet much of the work that takes place here every day remains invisible to the wider public. Through the Damen Experience, Damen aims to showcase the expertise, technology and craftsmanship that underpin the maritime sector.

"Most people know the port from the ships they see coming and going, but they rarely see what it takes to keep those vessels operational, safe and ready for the future," says Tjeerd Schulting, Managing Director of Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam. "During the Damen Experience, visitors will meet the people, technologies and innovations that come together behind the scenes every day."

During the event, visitors will be guided around the Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam yard. They will explore the dry docks where vessels are maintained, repaired and modernised, and learn about the technologies being used to make shipping more efficient and sustainable. At the Talent Square, visitors can discover the wide range of careers available within the maritime sector and experience first-hand how technology and innovation are shaping the jobs of today and tomorrow.

A special highlight of the programme is the opening of Zr. Ms. Rotterdam to visitors. The 166-metre amphibious transport vessel of the Royal Netherlands Navy is currently undergoing maintenance at Damen. Visitors can follow a route through various areas of the ship and discover how it supports a wide range of missions, from humanitarian assistance and disaster relief to military operations.

The Damen Experience forms part of the first-ever Havenweek Amsterdam. Through this initiative, organisations from across the port and maritime sectors aim to demonstrate the importance of the port to the city, the region and the Netherlands as a whole. At a time when the future of Amsterdam's port area is the subject of increasing discussion, the event offers a unique opportunity to experience the port up close.

For the occasion, Damen will operate a dedicated ferry service between the NACO House behind Amsterdam Central Station and the shipyard in Amsterdam North, allowing visitors to begin their experience on the water.
