Ready for tomorrow - whatever it brings
No one knows what the future will bring. We cannot foresee which fuels will power our tugs in the years ahead. Therefore, we have developed the Damen Fuel Flexible Tugs range. These vessels are built to operate on conventional diesel fuel today - ensuring their ability to compete in the current market - while being prepared for conversion to a range of alternative fuels tomorrow. The tugs are able to operate on 100% biofuel and are constructed ready for adaptation to either hybrid electric or methanol.
Face the future with confidence
Ready for the long-term
Damen Fuel Flexible Tugs are built to last a lifetime. With their versatile propulsion options, the vessels can be quickly adapted to meet future fuel requirements, ensuring relevance in the years ahead.
Range of options
The tugs are able to operate on 100% biofuel and are prepared for conversion to hybrid electric or methanol propulsion, enabling zero emission or carbon neutral operations.
Cost-efficient solution
The tugs are designed to offer a price per tonne of bollard pull that is comparable with a conventional tug. The adaptation to alternative propulsion will take place at a later date, when it can offer a secure return on investment.
Future-proof notation
The tugs benefit from future-proof methanol-prepared class notation, enabling space and structural requirements to be integrated during construction to reduce retrofit requirements in the future.
Ultra-low emissions potential
The vessels are also prepared for installation of a Damen Ultra Low Emissions Vessel (ULEV) system in future, combining a diesel particulate filter (DPF) with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology.
Proof of concept
The future starts here
Of all the challenges facing the maritime industry, perhaps the one that most defines the moment is that of fuel uncertainty. With no way of knowing what fuel, or fuels, will be available, affordable – or perhaps, mandatory – in the future, the way forward lies in flexibility.
ASD Tug 2713 FF gets methanol approval
Damen Shipyards Group has received class and flag state approval for its ASD Tug 2713 Fuel Flexible (FF) to operate on methanol fuel. The approval was issued by Bureau Veritas and the Kingdom of the Netherlands flag state, respectively.
An answer to many questions
The Damen Fuel Flexible Tugs range is prepared for the future – whatever it may hold. The numerous new regulations facing the industry in recent years leave no room for doubt – the maritime energy transition is underway.
